GENERAL SESSION DAY 1
9:40 a.m.–10:50 a.m.
Haitian Disaster Relief
Moderator/Speaker: John Macdonald, MD, FACS
Speakers: Robert Kirsner, MD, PhD; Crystal Powell, PT, CWS; Barbara Bates-Jensen, PhD, RN
The January 2010 earthquake in Haiti has been described as the worst natural disaster, per
nation size and population, in history. More than ever before, focused, effective wound care
played a major role in the disaster relief. This session will describe the enormity of the disaster,
the organizational demands, and the evolving creation of the University of Miami wound care
program. The experience of participating volunteers will be highlighted.

Supported, in part, by an educational grant from KCI.
BREAK
10:50 a.m.– 11:00 a.m.
(3 Concurrent Sessions – choose one)
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
SESSION 1: Comprehensive Assessment of Patients with Chronic Wounds
Moderator/Speaker: Susie Seaman, MSN, NP, CWOCN
Patients who present with complex wounds may have local or systemic conditions that negatively
impact healing. This session will review pertinent aspects of the history and physical
examination that should be obtained to identify all factors that impair healing. The session
will also discuss diagnostic studies (eg, radiologic tests, noninvasive vascular testing, and
laboratory work) and differential diagnoses to consider when caring for these patients. Participants
will practice comprehensive assessment using case studies.
SESSION 2: Epidemiology of Diabetic Foot Ulcers
Moderator/Speaker: David J. Margolis, MD, PhD
Speaker: Gayle E. Reiber, MPH, PhD
Diabetic foot ulcer and amputation are both severe complications of diabetes mellitus. The goal of this session is to describe the epidemiology of foot ulcer and lower extremity amputation. Topics to be discussed will include the incidence and prevalence of foot ulcer and lower extremity amputation in those with diabetes, as well as variation in these rates due to region, gender, age, and race/ethnicity. Risk factors for the progression of foot ulcer to amputation will also be discussed.
SESSION 3: Controversies in Debridement
Moderator/Speaker: Vickie Driver, DPM, MS, FACFAS
Speakers: Lawrence Lavery, DPM, MPH, Matteo Fabbi, MD
Does the single-stage approach eliminate the need for additional surgical procedures with
their associated costs and risks? Do we find healing times significantly reduced in either setting
that results in decreased hospital stays and subsequent costs? Does quick surgical closure
impact recidivism? We will debate which method is most effective, and when might one
method versus the other produce both short-term and long-term benefits.
BREAK
12:00 PM – 12:10 PM
INDUSTRY-SUPPORTED SYMPOSIA
12:10 PM – 1:40 PM
BREAK
1:40 PM – 1:50 PM
(3 Concurrent Sessions – choose one)
1:50 PM – 2:50 PM
SESSION 4: Dressings 2010
Moderator/Speaker: Debra Netsch, APRN, DNP, CNP, CWOCN
Speaker: Patrick J. Parks, MD, PhD
This session will present topical management in wound care. Dressing materials and technologies
will be discussed, and development of a product formulary will be reviewed. The audience
is included in case-study problem-solving.
SESSION 5: Offloading the Diabetic Foot
Moderator/Speaker: Lawrence Lavery, DPM, MPH
Speaker: Kendrick Whitney, MD
This session will address the evidence for interventions to offload the diabetic foot and will
emphasize available comparative effectiveness data to use in the decision-making process
when choosing between modalities to offload the wounded extremity. A transitional approach
will be presented for both healing and maturing the skin after a wound develops.
After the wound is closed, an evidence-based strategy for maintaining a wound-free foot
using available footwear will be presented.
SESSION 6: Care of the Complicated Acute Care Patient
Moderator/Speaker: C. Tod Brindle, BSN, RN, ET, CWOCN, CLIN IV
Speaker: Tom Wolvos, MD, FACS
Treatment of complex abdominal wounds including enterocutaneous fistulas and exposed
mesh from medical, surgical, and nursing standpoints will be discussed. Case
presentation and photos will allow attendees to enhance their understanding of how fistulas
form and how the abdominal wound is managed. Topics from spontaneous closure,
fistula isolation, and mesh management will be discussed from physician and nursing
perspectives.
BREAK
2:50 PM – 3:00 PM
(3 Concurrent Sessions – choose one)
3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
SESSION 7: New Paradigms in Wound Dressings
Moderator/Speaker: Dot Weir, RN, CWON, CWS
Speaker: Kevin Y. Woo, RN, MSc, PhD, ACNP, GNC(C), FAPWCA
New dressing and local wound technologies are only effective with a holistic patient approach
to treat the cause and address patient-centered concerns, including pain before optimizing
local care. This session will give a combined nursing and medical perspective on newer options
for debridement, bacterial balance, moisture balance, and advanced therapeutic products for
stalled chronic wounds.
SESSION 8: Controversies in the Treatment of Osteomyelitis
Moderator/Speaker: Vickie Driver, DPM, MS, FACFAS
Speaker: Lawrence Lavery, DPM, MPH
Faculty for this session will debate various surgical versus medical treatments for
osteomyelitis.
SESSION 9: Update on Clinical Research Trials
Moderator/Speaker: Oscar M. Alvarez, PhD
Speaker: Peter Sheehan, MD
This session will introduce participants to new and emerging data from recently completed or
ongoing clinical research trials. Topics will include diabetic foot ulcers, vascular wounds,
lymphedema, inflammatory ulcers, wound infection, debridement, diagnostics, growth factors,
mechanical forces, and drugs under development.
BREAK
4:00 PM – 4:10 PM
(3 Concurrent Sessions – choose one)
4:10 PM – 5:10 PM
SESSION 10: Compression Modalities: What, When, and How
Moderator/Speaker: Susie Seaman, MSN, NP, CWOCN
Speaker: Mary Jo Geyer, PT, PhD, FCCWS, CLT, CPed
This session will focus on indications, mechanisms of action of compression
therapy, and practical hints for appropriate use. Problems to be discussed
include tissue fibrosis and fat deposits; distorted shapes and folds; coexisting
conditions such as infection, obesity, and arterial insufficiency; and
limited mobility.
SESSION 11: Predicting Ulcer Formation and Healing
Moderator/Speaker: David J. Margolis, MD, PhD
This session will be a literature-based review of assessing a patient’s risk for achieving healing of diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers. We will also discuss surrogate end points that can be used to predict eventual healing. Finally, a question and answer session will be held to discuss the use of prognostic modeling and surrogate markers in the design of clinical trials.

Supported by an educational grant from Organogenesis, Inc.
SESSION 12: Putting Ideas to Work: Recent Advances in Wound Therapy
Moderator/Speaker: Jeffrey Davidson, PhD
Speaker: Edward (Ted) Tredget, MD, MSc, FRCSC
Therapeutic application of so-called stem cells has become widespread. One objective
of the recent advances session is to clarify the role and activity of circulating, marrowderived,
multipotential cells in tissue repair. Genetic modification of cells can produce
temporary or permanent changes in their chemistry. The second goal of the session is to
review current progress in gene medicine as a drug delivery system for wound healing
and as a method for cellular reprogramming.
